This isn’t a post about why you should not pursue graphic design work if that is your passion, and I am just using this as an example because this is what I do; no matter what business you decide to plunge into or are currently in, there will always be challenges to overcome.
For myself, my biggest struggle in Freelance Graphic Design is the fact that there is always somebody willing to do the work for less money. If you have the education and the experience to back yourself up; you cannot lower yourself to work for free, you will win and lose some but in the end people will see your worth if you are really passionate about what you do.
To the customer/client; this can seem like a win getting services for cheaper but it is not always the case; as with any business if you are paying for a service or a product; most of the time you get what you pay for.
It is good to work within your clients budget and I believe this is important because every business; big or small, requires different things and are at different stages.
Same goes for businesses where you sell product to your customers. If you are trying so hard to get their business by offering them such low prices that you aren’t covering your costs of shipping, packaging or whatever else you’re going to kick yourself later. Be careful you don’t dig yourself into a rut you cannot get out of later; take care of yourself and you will be able to be the best you can be to serve your customers.
I know being in business for yourself can sometimes be tough; you feel you need to bow down and take whatever you can get, but that could run you into problems.
If you cut yourself down too low, you could be working hours and hours on a project or product you offer and by the end you only made a couple dollars an hour or maybe not even covering your costs. Or you could be overloading yourself with too many jobs like this and you miss a great opportunity that comes along because you are too busy to take it.
I saw this quote/post before by this person (not sure if he is the original one to say this) but I've always liked this and keep reminding myself this.
" You have to say no to a lot of good things in order to be able
to say yes to a lot of great things. " – Sean McCabe
